Start with WEBTOON, Tapas, Tappytoon, Manta or Lezhin Comics for legal English-language manhwa. Which one you need depends on the title. There is no single app with every licensed series, and “free to download” does not mean every chapter is free to read.

If you already know the comic you want, search for that title first and confirm the creator credits. If you are browsing, choose a platform whose reading model suits you. Waiting for a daily unlock and paying for a long binge are very different ways to spend an evening.

Which manhwa app fits the way you read?

  • You want free reading and can wait: start with WEBTOON’s free episodes or an eligible Tapas Wait Until Free series. Beware the Villainess! on Tapas is one concrete title to inspect. Timers apply to selected episodes, so plan around them instead of expecting an unlimited free binge.
  • You want to read for a whole weekend: for Under the Oak Tree, compare Manta Membership access to the cost of unlocking episodes separately. Its Unlimited badge makes Membership relevant; the same calculation would be pointless for a title outside that library.
  • You only want one particular comic: follow its licensed English listing. Marriage of Convenience is on Tappytoon; Romance 101 is on WEBTOON. The best app is the one with the correct edition and a reading model you can afford.

For browsing, start with one app and one sample. Installing five apps before choosing a story makes the decision harder without improving your reading list.

WEBTOON: a straightforward place to browse

WEBTOON is a sensible first stop when you want to discover a series without committing to a subscription. Its catalog includes comics from different countries, so do not assume everything on the platform is Korean manhwa.

Fast Pass lets readers pay to access eligible episodes ahead of their free release. Daily Pass is a different system: the official help page describes timed access, with an unlocked Daily Pass episode available for 14 days. Read the title’s episode list rather than applying one series’ rules to another.

A completed label tells you the story has finished, not that the entire series can be read free in one sitting. Check the final episodes before settling in for a long binge.

Tapas: check the timer and the format

Tapas uses Ink to unlock paid episodes. Selected series offer Wait Until Free, but the eligible episodes and waiting periods differ. Its help center states that WUF access is available through the app and lasts 72 hours after an episode unlocks.

That matters if you collect free unlocks and plan to read them all next weekend: some may have closed again. Newer episodes can also be excluded from the timer. Look for the WUF symbol on the actual episode you want.

Tapas carries both comics and prose novels. If two listings share a name, check the format before spending Ink. Purchasing one version does not mean you have bought the other.

Tappytoon: useful when you have a title in mind

Tappytoon offers licensed comics and novels, with Points used for paid chapter access. Its official app listing describes Time Till Free on selected titles and chapters, alongside tickets and other offers.

Open the episode list and read the eligibility details. A free timer on the series does not establish that every chapter, including its newest releases, qualifies. Tappytoon Club is a membership with Points and benefits; do not mistake that name for an all-you-can-read catalog.

For a title available on more than one service, compare the same edition and the chapters you still need. A generous-looking welcome offer may matter less than the cost of finishing the current arc.

Manta: membership and Gems are separate choices

Manta’s Membership includes its curated Unlimited Library. The broader service also has titles and episodes unlocked with Gems. Some library titles support both options, so seeing a Gem button does not by itself tell you whether Membership access is unavailable.

Use the Unlimited filter and inspect the Membership badge on the series page. This is the step that prevents buying a plan for a comic it does not include. Premium membership adds Gems, but it still is not a promise of unrestricted access to every Gem-only title.

For a concrete place to start, see our Under the Oak Tree reader’s guide. It explains the comic’s appeal and distinguishes the Manta release from the original novel and English print edition.

Lezhin Comics: read the listing closely

Lezhin offers paid episode access through Coins, alongside free episodes and promotions. Its official introduction describes Wait Until Free schedules that can differ between series. Treat an event banner as a current offer, not a permanent rule for the catalog.

Check the age rating and edition. A mature release and an edited version may not contain the same material, and app-store availability can differ from what a website shows. Choose the version you intend to follow before purchasing a run of episodes.

How to find a specific manhwa legally

  1. Collect the exact title and creator names. Alternate English titles are common enough that one failed search proves very little.
  2. Find a publisher or platform announcement. Confirm who carries the English comic, rather than trusting a repost’s “official” label.
  3. Search that platform directly. Check the language, region, format and creator credits together.
  4. Inspect several points in the episode list. Look at the opening, the next locked episode and the newest available installment.
  5. Read the sample before buying. You are choosing the story, translation and reading interface, not just a cover.

Can you read manhwa legally for free?

Yes, through free episodes, eligible waiting systems and publisher promotions. The limitation is scope: a free opening does not promise a free ending, and a timed unlock is not the same as ongoing paid access.

For collected editions, also check your library’s catalog or ebook service. Search the full English title and ask whether the library can obtain it. Availability depends on your library’s collection and lending licenses.

A real example: the next five Marriage of Convenience episodes

On September 20, 2026, Tappytoon’s revised Marriage of Convenience listing showed episodes 1–5 free and episodes 6–10 at 300 Points each. Reading those next five without an offer therefore costs 5 × 300 = 1,500 Points.

If your balance is 600 Points, you need another 900 Points. Compare the cash prices of the bundles available to your account and region, then buy the smallest suitable option within your budget. A 1,500-Point reading cost is not a universal dollar price: bundles, tax and promotions affect the money charged. You also cannot compare “300 Points” with another platform’s “300 Ink” as if they were the same currency.

This is a small-batch calculation. For a full binge, count all the locked episodes you intend to read and check any bulk offer before buying currency. For a subscription title, compare that amount with one billing period and confirm that the same comic is included.

How to avoid spending more than you intended

Set a cash limit before buying virtual currency. Count leftover currency as money already spent, not money saved. A larger bundle only helps if you intended to read enough paid episodes to use it.

For a subscription, confirm the title is included, check the renewal terms and decide whether you will read enough during the billing period. The cheapest route for someone following one chapter a week may be different from the best route for a weekend binge.

If a series has disappeared, check the platform’s notices for a license change or transfer. An old recommendation cannot guarantee current access. Keep your reading list flexible and use the live series page as the final check before payment.
