After finishing the 2011 Hunter × Hunter anime, start the manga at chapter 340, at the end of Volume 32. Episode 148 reaches the end of chapter 339. Volume 33 comes next, beginning with chapter 341, so buying that volume alone skips the first chapter after the anime.

You do not need to restart the whole manga to follow the continuation. The main thing is to check which anime adaptation you watched: the chapter 340 answer applies to the 148-episode 2011 series, not the 1999 version.

What you finished Where to continue Book to look for
2011 anime, episode 148 Chapter 340; chapter 339 is an optional refresher Volume 32, then Volume 33
1999 anime plus all OVAs, through Greed Island Final Chapter 185, with a little overlap Volume 18
Only the original 62-episode 1999 TV series Continue with the original OVA series, then Greed Island and Greed Island Final After all three OVA installments, use chapter 185 in Volume 18

If your final episode was “Past × And × Future,” you are at the end of the 2011 adaptation. The story continues in print, even though that episode gives the television series a comfortable stopping point.

Should you buy Volume 32 or Volume 33?

Choose Volume 32 if you want the exact continuation without a gap. Most of that book overlaps with the anime’s final stretch, but its last chapter is new territory. Volume 33 is the next full book after that transition.

The official VIZ chapter list groups chapters 331–340 under Volume 32 and chapters 341–350 under Volume 33. That distinction matters when a reading guide says “start with Volume 33”: it is a convenient shorthand, but not the complete chapter-by-chapter handoff.

  • Reading digitally by chapter? Open chapter 340 and carry on in numerical order.
  • Buying collected books? Get Volume 32 for the bridge, then Volume 33.
  • Already own Volume 33? Read chapter 340 through an official chapter service first, if it is available in your region.

Where to read Hunter × Hunter after the anime

For English readers, start with Hunter × Hunter on VIZ / Shonen Jump. The chapter list makes it easy to find the correct number; access to older chapters can require a membership and varies by location. A free preview or the latest free chapters should not be mistaken for free access to chapter 340.

If you prefer books, VIZ’s pages for Volume 32 and Volume 33 identify the English editions and link to retailers. Choose the paperback or digital option that suits you. Check the language and volume number before paying, especially when a retailer lists several editions together.

Do you need to read from chapter 1?

No. Continue at chapter 340 if your priority is finding out what happens next. You already have the background needed from the 2011 anime. A complete reread is worthwhile for a different reason: seeing Togashi’s panel layouts, dialogue and storytelling at your own pace.

If it has been a while since you watched, reread chapter 339 before moving on. That is a smaller commitment than starting over, and it reconnects the ending you remember with the next chapter. If you feel attached to the earliest adventures and want a fuller comparison between formats, begin at chapter 1 instead.

What changes after the anime? A spoiler-free heads-up

Allow the continuation time to establish its next direction. The manga expands the cast and gives more space to competing interests, plans and explanations. If you enjoyed the negotiations and deductions as much as the fights, that can be part of the appeal.

Read a few chapters at a time rather than treating every page as a race to the next battle. When a conversation introduces several names or conditions, pausing to place them is more useful than searching a character wiki and accidentally spoiling yourself.

Quick questions

Is chapter 339 or chapter 340 the right starting point?

Chapter 340 is the continuation. Chapter 339 is useful if you want to revisit the anime’s ending first; it is not an additional chapter you must read to unlock the rest.

Can I start at chapter 340 after the 1999 anime?

No. The original TV run and its three OVA installments stop much earlier. Finish that adaptation through Greed Island Final, then read from chapter 185 in Volume 18. Chapter 340 would skip a large part of the story.

Should I wait for another anime season?

If you want the continuation now, the manga is the direct route. A chapter guide cannot promise when more episodes will arrive. Read the next chapter without relying on an unconfirmed adaptation schedule.
