Manhua means Chinese comics. In English, the label is commonly used for comics from Chinese-speaking regions, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. You can read manhua in print, as digital pages or as a comic designed for vertical scrolling.
The easiest mistake is to treat manhua as a particular look: full color, long-haired fighters and endless power levels. Those features describe some popular series. They do not define the medium.
What does manhua mean?
Manhua is written 漫画 in simplified Chinese and 漫畫 in traditional Chinese, with the romanization mànhuà. The word covers comics and cartoons. English-language bookshops and fan discussions tend to use it more narrowly to identify Chinese comics alongside Japanese manga and Korean manhwa.
This is a useful browsing distinction, not a rule that every creator or international production fits neatly into one national box. When a title is unclear, its credited creator, original publication and licensed edition are better evidence than its artwork.

| Term | Usual English meaning | Reading format |
|---|---|---|
| Manhua | Chinese comics | Printed pages or scrolling; direction depends on the edition |
| Manhwa | Korean comics | Print editions and digital formats, including vertical webtoons |
| Manga | Japanese comics | Often right-to-left pages; digital and color exceptions exist |
The difference between manhua and manhwa is easy to miss in a search result, but it matters when you are trying to locate an official edition. A Korean romance webcomic does not become manhua because a repost labels it that way. Conversely, a Chinese comic does not become manga because a shop groups several kinds of Asian comics on one shelf.
“Webtoon” describes a digital comic tradition and commonly a scrolling format; WEBTOON is also the name of a publishing platform. Neither usage means every comic involved is Korean. Format and origin answer different questions.
Which direction do you read manhua?
Follow the edition in front of you. Some manhua reads left to right, some right to left, and many digital series scroll from top to bottom. There is no single direction that works for every Chinese comic.
For print, look for a reading-direction guide near the opening pages. On a phone, check whether the reader expects a swipe or a vertical scroll. If a conversation seems to answer a question before anyone asks it, pause and check the panel sequence before deciding the translation makes no sense.

For a right-to-left page, reverse the horizontal sequence: start at the top right, move left, then go down to the next row. The diagram shows common layouts, not a universal rule for manhua.
Color is equally unreliable as an identifier. A full-color scrolling comic can be manhua or manhwa, while a printed Chinese comic may use black-and-white art. Choose the correct series and edition first; let its layout teach you how to read it.
What kinds of stories can you find?
Fantasy is an easy entry point, but manhua also includes romance, comedy and stories about everyday life. These English-language releases show why the label alone is not enough to choose a book:
- Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Comic / Manhua) is the comic adaptation of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu’s novel, published in English by Seven Seas. Make sure you select the comic if you want illustrated sequential storytelling; the novel is a separate edition.
- I Ship My Rival x Me (The Comic / Manhua), also listed by Seven Seas, offers a contemporary romantic-comedy direction rather than an immortal-cultivation adventure.
- My Wife Is from a Thousand Years Ago is a time-travel romance on Webnovel. A young woman from the Tang dynasty arrives in the present and meets a modern man. It offers a man–woman relationship and the practical comedy of adjusting to a different era.

These examples are starting points for browsing, not a ranking. Read the publisher’s synopsis and sample, then check the age guidance. A gentle cover or beautiful character design does not guarantee a gentle story.
The first two examples involve romance between men; the third does not. That difference does not change their format. Danmei describes a romantic genre; manhua describes Chinese comics across many genres. Keeping those labels separate stops two recommendations from becoming a misleading definition of the whole medium.
If a fantasy synopsis uses unfamiliar labels, our guide to xianxia and wuxia explains what to expect. Those are genre terms that can apply to novels, comics and screen stories; they are not synonyms for manhua.
Is manhua the same as donghua?
No. Manhua is read; donghua is watched. The same title may exist as both, sometimes with a novel before either adaptation. Our donghua explainer covers Chinese animation.
Do not assume comic chapters map one-to-one onto animated episodes. Adaptations may combine scenes, move information or stop at different points. If you are switching formats, a little overlap is usually less confusing than jumping forward based only on a chapter number someone posted online.
Where to read manhua in English
For the first two comics above, use the official distributor listings for Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Comic / Manhua) and I Ship My Rival x Me (The Comic / Manhua). Both identify the Seven Seas English comic editions and provide book details or buying options. A publisher’s book listing and a platform’s scrolling release may package the story differently, so compare the format as well as the title.
Open My Wife Is from a Thousand Years Ago on Webnovel for the comic edition, then inspect which chapters are free or locked.
- Search the title with the creator’s name. This helps distinguish alternate translations and unrelated works with similar names.
- Check the format label. “Novel,” “comic/manhua” and “animation” are separate products, even when their covers share characters.
- Use the publisher’s current catalog. Confirm an English license and follow its named retailer or reading-platform options.
- Try the sample. Look at lettering size, panel flow and translation readability before buying several volumes.
- Check availability in your country. An English edition existing somewhere does not guarantee that every digital store can sell it to you.
Is manhua worth trying if you already read manga?
Yes, if a particular story catches your interest. You already know how much variety one comic tradition can contain; bring that same openness here. Start with one premise you actually want to read, rather than expecting an entire medium to feel like the first cultivation series you encountered.
