Renegade Immortal is a promising choice if you want a long cultivation story about a disadvantaged protagonist learning how to survive and advance. It is a weaker choice if you need a completed series, a romance-led plot or a hero whose exceptional talent immediately removes the obstacles in his way.

This review covers the opening of the 2023 donghua, also called Xian Ni. It assesses the starting premise and presentation, not the quality of every later arc. The viewing guide below separates the main series from the movie and explains what an ongoing release means for a new viewer.

Why Wang Lin’s starting point works

Wang Lin begins as a rural young man with limited natural aptitude for cultivation. The opening moves from vast supernatural spaces to modest family surroundings. That change gives the spectacle a human scale: the world of powerful cultivators is impressive, but it is far removed from the life he knows.

That is a useful foundation for an underdog story. His intelligence and persistence have a job to do because talent alone will not carry him. An opportunity to learn can matter before any spectacular victory does. If you enjoy watching a protagonist work out how to advance, there is a reason to follow him beyond waiting for a more powerful version to appear.

The limitation is familiarity. A disadvantaged young man pursuing cultivation is an established genre setup. The premise alone does not make this a fresh recommendation for someone tired of that structure. Start it for Wang Lin’s circumstances and the presentation, rather than expecting the opening to discard cultivation conventions.

Do you need to understand cultivation first?

No. Follow Wang Lin’s immediate problem before trying to memorise the ranks. For a beginner, cultivation means training to develop spiritual abilities and progress beyond ordinary human limits. In this story, limited aptitude makes access to training and opportunities part of the problem, not something the protagonist can assume.

Ask what each new stage lets Wang Lin do and who still has power over him. When you want the broader hierarchy, our Renegade Immortal cultivation-level guide separates ranks and translation names. Use its early-stage information first if you want to avoid reading ahead of the animation.

The 3D presentation sells scale early

The opening’s floating stone formations, cloud-filled spaces and luminous supernatural effects quickly establish a world larger than an ordinary village. This is where the 3D approach has an immediate advantage: depth and distance can make a small figure feel exposed inside a much larger environment.

Whether that is your preferred style is a separate question from how much action a trailer contains. Renegade Immortal uses modelled characters and environments, so do not expect the linework or facial exaggeration of a 2D series. Watch part of the official first episode on the screen you normally use. It is a better test of your comfort with the presentation than a short, heavily edited fight clip.

What may make you stop watching?

The opening has to make you care about the journey before the later spectacle. A highlight reel can make Wang Lin look like an immediate power-fantasy lead. Starting from episode one asks you to spend time with the person before that image. If only the promise of much later battles interests you, this may be too long a commitment for what you want.

Try the first few episodes for Wang Lin’s next opportunity and the people who control access to it. If those negotiations interest you, the setup has more to offer than a future highlight reel. If you want companionship and team roles sooner, compare Soul Land before committing to another long run.

The series is still ongoing. Catching up means waiting for new episodes, not reaching a finished animated ending. It suits someone happy to follow a serial adventure; it is a poor fit for a weekend watch that needs a conclusive finish.

Is Renegade Immortal a romance recommendation?

Not on the strength of its opening. Choose it for Wang Lin’s cultivation journey. Relationships can matter within that story, but the starting material does not offer enough romantic development to recommend it chiefly as a love story.

Its serious fantasy tone also makes it a different choice from a light school comedy. For a younger viewer, check the content guidance on the local episode page. WeTV labels the series T13 in the listing linked below; regional ratings may differ.

How many Renegade Immortal episodes are there?

The donghua is ongoing. At the November 1, 2026 check, WeTV lists episodes through 164. Its “All 180 EPs” label is not a count of episodes already available to watch.

Use the highest playable episode in the official playlist to check your current backlog. Access can differ between free viewers and subscribers, and the count will change as episodes are released. Do not confuse the end of a numbered batch or a platform season label with the end of the whole adaptation.

Watch order: start with the main series

  1. Open the official Renegade Immortal series page and select episode one.
  2. Continue in the main playlist’s numbered order. You do not need another donghua as a prequel.
  3. Treat separately listed movies, specials and compilations as separate items. Do not let a search result move you into one halfway through the opening run.

WeTV lists Renegade Immortal: Divine Descent separately from the series. Save it for after you know the main characters and setting; it is not an alternative episode one. A search result headed by the film should not change the starting point of your main-series playlist.

Where to watch with English subtitles

Start with Renegade Immortal episode one on WeTV, or open the official series playlist. Confirm the subtitle track and the episode’s access label in your region before committing to a subscription.

The listing mixes episodes without a VIP label and later episodes marked VIP. That is a reason to inspect the part you intend to watch, not to assume the entire series is free because the first episode opens. Platform availability and subtitle options can vary by country.
